(3) : Milk (2008)

This movie is a biography of Harvey Milk.

The story starts from NYC but as Harvey moves to Castro District, San Francisco, most of the story takes place there. Castro is the most well known gay neighborhood.

As the movie starts, Harvey turns 40 years old and he feels that he has done nothing so far in his entire life. So Harvey opens a camera shop in Castro with his partner, Scott.
But they got rejected to get the business license because they are gay.

This became the main reason that he starts out the demonstration of the gay rights.    He gets a lot of supports from other gay people in the city and finally becomes the very first gay man to be elected as a local politician, and also an activist.

Due to his activity, the city, Castro District, becomes the symbol of gay and homo sexual people in the United States.

Dan White, who is also the politician, is the notorious supervisor of the San Francisco government. He was against to Harvey and his works and things didn't worked as he thought. He has resigned after Harvey gets more supports from the people. But he wanted to recall his resign at his office and since it didn't worked as what he planned, he murdered Harvey Milk, the first elected homosexual politician, and the mayor of the San Francisco in 1978. But unfairly, he served only a few years in prison because he was close with the police and the juries in the law court.

In this film, it also shows that Harvey has faced the experience of his partners' suicide while he was working and serving as the activist and also as the politician. His partners' suicide is because homosexuals often can't control themselves. And they struggle with their identity.

Harvey wanted to show homosexual people that their cause was not a hopeless one and similarly bring the light to the public as a whole about homosexuality.

Homosexuals are the same human being just like us, so called 'straight'. But only few cities allowed their marriage these days or to-be legalize.

Today, the trial regarding the gay marriage is the hot potato in United States that even the free audience tickets were sold in a very expensive price few weeks ago.
In my opinion, I think we should try to accept them as how they are.

Sean Penn's acting made my hair stand on the end. He really looked like Harvey Milk, that made me astonished. You can notice this by comparing the picture of the 'real' Harvey Milk and Sean Penn from the poster.

Personally, I love to watch the biography films. Although the story of this film was mainly about the gay people and their rights, I really enjoyed watching it. It was touching to see that gay people try to find their rights rather than struggling from their identity.
Lastly, Harvey's famous line "My name is Harvey Milk, and I want to recruit you" keep remains on my mind.

  1. Although I haven't seen this movie, I remember that Sean Penn won an Oscar award for his great acting. An eariler movie in the same vein was Philadelphia (starring Tom Hanks).

I didn't know that Mr. Milk was murdered (or assassinated?).
