(2) : Notting Hill (1999)

Film Review(2) : Notting Hill (1999)

I am going to post about my all time favourite movie, 'Notting Hill'.

Anna, who is a famous actress, steps into William’s bookstore, every man’s dream came true to him.

He accidently splits his orange juice all over Anna.
William offers Anna to change in his apartment and she thanks him with a kiss.
From then they started to get to know each other more over time but being with the famous actress made him feel very uneasy. As the movie goes on to the climax, suddenly, her American boyfriend appears and their relationship was getting hard to maintain. But later on, William and Anna become official through the conference, against the odds.

This film is about love between ordinary man and the famous actress in the world, despite their nationality, background, and fame.

As the film goes to the climax, with the truth unknown, Anna is constantly being under the public scrutiny of the gossip hungry press that she has hard time in her every move and even love.
Falling in love with an ordinary guy, William is not easy, because they live in two different worlds which are apart.

This reminds me of todays' problem. That people having too much attention towards actors and actress thesedays. The hungry press gives no respect to the ordinary person; they reveal every person’s info to the media.

This film was the very first movie that made me like the ‘Romantic Comedy’ genre.
By watching this film, London’s Notting Hill became the street that I would like to walk.
Last year, when I went to Paris and London, I couldn’t miss visiting Notting Hill.
While I was walking down Notting Hill, the storyline passed me by as if I was the main character.
And I think the relationship between the ordinary guy and the famous actress will be every audience’s dream once in a life time. The background and the original sound track were lovely too.

(1) : The Help (2011)

Film Review (1) : The Help (2011)

The story starts in the late 1960s in Mississippi.

There were strict rules between the whites and blacks.

Skeeter Phelan, an ordinary American young white lady, who was raised by the nanny since she was young.

She wants to become a writer who can change the world
but she was rejected from the companies where she applied to.

She received an offer from the 'Jackson Journal', writing columns about the house keeping things. Skeeter tries to write a book and it was about the black people living as maids.

But since she has no knowledge about the maids’ life and writing the maids’ life recalling her memories about her nanny was difficult.

So through her old nanny's help, she gathers the maids in her town and interviews them and Skeeter faces the shocking problem about the racial discrimination.

Based on their interview, she planned to write a book and named ‘The Help’. This became the best seller and became the hot potato among the people.

People faced the discrimination happening in their society.

Finally, the book changed readers’ mind and Skeeter’s dream came true.

In one of the lecture that I'm taking this semester, I am studying about the discrimination problem between gender and race.

So I began to search movies that shows  discrimination problems.
In this film, the main social issue was the racial discrimination and inequality given to the blacks and the unequal human rights.

By watching this film, it reminded of the very first time when I learnt about the American history back in my secondary school years,

I never felt that the KKK and the racial discrimination was such a serious problem that they even used different toilets and place where they eat and even riding the bus.

But at the same time, I wonder, if the whites are that worried about mingling with blacks, how they trust them and let their kids to be raised by the nannies.

I want to learn the nanny’s courage, looking out for the human rights.

If I were in their shoes, I would try to find the way to fix the problem, just like how the nannies did.
It was such a touching film.
